The ceremonial conference of the National Archives of Hungary took place in the Congress Room of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on the occasion of its 250th anniversary of its foundation on 2 March 2006. In the morning session, Dr. Katalin Szili, Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, and Dr. András Benedek, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage delivered congratulatory speeches. Our institution was complimented by Dr. Lorenz Mikoletzky, Director General of the Austrian State Archives and Chairman of the International Council on Archives, by Dr. Peter Kartous, Director of the Slovak National Archives, and by Dr. László Szögi, Director General and Chairman of the Association of Hungarian Archivists.
The meeting was graced by the presences of Dr. Zoltán Lomnici, Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Hungary; László Mandur, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament; Iván Pető, Chairman of the Cultural Committee of the Hungarian Parliament; Erika Koncz, Deputy Under-Secretary of the Ministry of the National Cultural Heritage; Prof. Dr. József Hámori, former minister of culture, and Prof. Dr. Ernő Marosi, academicians and Vice-Presidents of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; Dr. György Földes, Director General of the Institute of the Political History; Prof. Dr. Lajos Izsák, Vice-Rector of the Eötvös Loránd University; and delegates, leaders and members of government organs and institutions as well.
European archives and archival life were represented by Joan van Albada, Secretary General of the International Council on Archives; and by other archival leaders from Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Poland, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Germany, Bavaria, the Federation of Russia, Rumania, Sweden, Serbia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
In the afternoon session current issues of archival work were discussed in the lectures of Dr. Lajos Körmendy, Chief Counsellor and Chief Archivist of the National Archives of Hungary; Martine de Boisdeffre, Head of the Archival Directorate of the Ministry of Culture, Paris; Daria NaÜecz, Director General of the Polish State Archives; Prof. Dr. Hartmut Weber, President of the Bundesarchiv; and Joan van Albada.
On the second day of the ceremonial meeting, our foreign guests made an excursion to the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma, where Dr. Asztrik Várszegi, bishop and archabbot, greeted them. Subsequently, they also visited the Archives of the Benedictine Archabbey.
