The "Archivum Regnicolare" ("The Archives of the Country"), established in Pozsony in 1756, includes the records of Hungary's chief justices, as well as parliamentary, legal and other documents concerning public administration. The feudal "Archivum Regnicolare" consists of three archives.

1./ Archivum Palatinale (The Palatines' Archives)

Years: (1542) 1554-1848 (1849);

Extent: 275,34 linear metres

The Palatines' Archives includes the remaining records of Palatines and Governor-generals of 1554-1848. The material of this archives is discontinuous because the Palatine's post was frequently left vacant. Neither it is complete because part of the official documents of the Palatines, especially those of the 16th-17th century, remained in the family archives of the Palatines or perished. The arrangement of the material differs from Palatine to Palatine; the most common arrangement is subject order.

The most valuable series of the Palatines' Archives are the records of Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary that can give a rich source of material of the diets between 1796 and 1844, the financial crisis in 1811, the French wars, noble uprisings and general administrative matters. For family and local history researchers the 1828 nationwide census, which lists the taxpayers of Hungary, Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, is a basic source. The census is arranged by counties (comitatus) and within that settlements can be found in alphabetical order. Besides the taxpaying population of a given settlement, it also kept track of crop results, incomes and livestock etc.

Language: Latin and German and partly Hungarian. Repertories, manuscript registers and indexes of the period aid research.

2./ Archivum Judicum Curiae

Years: 1586-1849

Extent: 7,25 linear meters

This archives contains the documents and protocols concerning the judicial and notarial activities of the Lord Chief Justice, the holder of the second highest public office after the Palatine. The material is discontinuous: no documents of the Lord Chief Justices who held an office between 1605 and 1655 are preserved in the "Archivum Regnicolare". The arrangement of the material differs from Justice to Justice; the most common arrangement is subject order.

Language: Latin and German and partly Hungarian. Repertories, manuscript registers and indexes of the period aid research.

3./ Archivum Regni

Years:  1222-1997

Extent:  116,73 linear metres

The Archivum Regni (the archives of the feudal country) was established in the first quarter of the 18th century, together with the development of the Habsburg central government offices.  It served the protection of the rights and privileges of the Estates and the organizational systems (e.g. diet). The most significant part of this material is the parliamentary records and document series of parliamentary committees delegated to examine various economic, administrative, educational and legal issues. Besides documents concerning the National Museum, the Academy of Sciences and the construction of Count Széchenyi's Chain Bridge, records of peace treaties, adjustment of frontiers and national censuses can be found in this material. The material is arranged by bigger subject items (ladula), smaller subject groups (fasciculus) and by serial numbers.

The material under the reference code ‘N 45' that consists of the issues of law and law-decrees enacted between 1267 and 1997 is uniquely valuable. Furthermore the records of the 1715 and 1720 national censuses provide a great deal of information for family and local history research. These censuses refer to the Hungarian counties (Transylvania, Croatia and Slavonia excluded) under civil administration and they give information on the taxpaying population and the relations of production of the given settlement. Districts and settlements can be found in alphabetical order within the counties.

Language: Latin and Hungarian. Repertories, manuscript registers and indexes of the period aid research. The digital database of the material of the 1715 census is available online.
